Like
human beings, dogs, cats, and other pets should be well cared for.
For pets that have been abandoned or lost by their owners, shelters
like the Humane Society are open to take them in. However, funding
for these sanctuaries tends to be limited, as funds tend to come from
private donations. Listed below are two areas to consider if you're
planning to extend assistance to pet shelters.
Identify
what the shelter needs
Drop
by a nearby animal shelter or check out its website. Ask staff or the
administrator about the supplies that are needed by the animal
shelter's wards. Bags
of pet food are needed in most shelters; plus, beddings, chew
toys, leashes, carriers, harnesses, water bottles, collars, litter
boxes, and food dishes. Shelters could use grooming provisions, too,
like shampoo, combs, etc. Don't forget to volunteer some of your time
if they're short on manpower.
Make
donations
Once
the shelter's needs have been identified, make the necessary
donations—whether its money, volunteer work, or used or new pet
supplies. Patrons can give the cash straight to the shelter
administrator, or do the shopping themselves at online pet supply
sites or neighborhood pet stores. If there are unused dog and cat
supplies at home, these can be delivered straight to the pet shelter
for immediate use. Just make sure that these articles have been
thoroughly washed.
